Live Review by "Miss Demeanour"

HOLLYWOOD GUN CLUB SHOOT TO THRILL

A low lit room. A stage. Gaffer tape. A rumbling crowd. And a lighting rig and amps which give an ominous feeling that something is about to blast the place apart.

The room is a temple, the stage is an altar, the God is rock and roll and the high priests are Adelaide's tribute to 80s hard rock and metal, Hollywood Gun Club.

Projected on a screen behind the band, David Lee Roth's manic gaze is fixated on the punters as the band take the stage and rip through the first songs - Lee Roth's 'Yankee Rose', Thin Lizzy's 'Boys Are Back In Town' and the KISS anthem 'Detroit Rock City', underpinned by the tight rhythm section of Andy and Pete.

Vocalist Kevan grabs the audience by the scruff of the neck and leads the band through a powerhouse retro journey, a who's who of the 80s rock genre.

The mix includes crowd-pleasing classics such as Sweet's 'Action' and Bon Jovi's 'Wanted Dead or Alive', with rhythm guitarist Paul taking the lead for a guitar solo worthy of Richie Sambora. Also on offer is a swag of songs fans would struggle to find being performed live in Adelaide - Judas Priest's 'Electric Eye', Ozzy Osbourne's 'Crazy Train', Living Color's powerful 'Cult of Personality' with its hypnotic riff, and the glorious three and a half minutes of guitar which is Van Halen's 'Panama'.

Along with other metal bands of the era - Rainbow, Dokken and Night Ranger - the Cult and Motley Crue also feature in the two-set show which is punctuated by a drum solo that stitches together Deep Purple's 'Fireball'
and 'The Mule', and guitarist Ward's blistering rendition of Van Halen's 'Eruption'.

The Gun Club leave the stage with the strains of Queen's 'Tie Your Mother Down' still ringing in the ears of the crowd, and return to serve up a meaty version of ACDC's 'Highway To Hell' as an encore.

The punters emerge, satiated. They return to the wilderness of the Adelaide cover scene, where they will search in vain for live performance of Iron Maiden and Velvet Revolver.

In another blue moon, when the Gun Club play again, they will come to worship once more.

Outside, the silence is deafening.

Hollywood Gun Club is Adelaide's premier classic rock concept band with a stage show to blow all the generic cover bands off the stage! With a set list featuring songs by Motley Crue, Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, KISS, Judas Priest, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, Whitesnake, Skid Row, Night Ranger, Dio and any other bands you can think of, it's easy to see why the 'Gun Club has a growing cult following.
